Xenogears - Yui by MelyCat Xenogears - Yui by MelyCat
Quiet, patient, understanding Yui....as we didn't get to see her :D

Its rather sad that she has such a tiny role even for a NPC in the game, I'm rather fond of her to be honest (and to be really honest I'm even a bit jealous that she snagged Citan ;) its that geeky intellectual, but can still kick ass thing about him)
Anyway, I know that she's not in that gawd awful chin to ankle dress she wears in the game, rather I ended up portraying her in what my imagination decided she might look like pregame, perhaps even when she and Citan first encountered each other ;)

(Before anyone says anything about the fact that its said that she used a sword I would like to also think that she was also capable in hand to hand as well. Her grandfather was rather proud of her marital arts after all and he was no pushover)

Anyway, Yui was drawn and painted completely in Photoshop where her outfit changed an upwards of 5 times and I was on the verge of leaving her completely handless as I absolutely hate doing hands *scowls* but I think she turned out alright in the end :D

Xenogears and Yui belong to Square (now Square Enix) and Citan respectively

my husband confirms it, after looking at this pic for a few seconds it looks like she tenses up a tiny bit and the clouds seem to move very slowly in the background. we both concur that it's really cool! this perspective in this is fabulous.

XD Its hard to picture her that way considering how she is portrayed in the game itself, but in the Perfect Works (translation by Ultimate Graphics) it says 'Is calm and kind, but her martial arts skills are her grandfather's pride'
:D I don't think she kicked much butt in that full length dress she wore...not that I think she couldn't but it'd be a pain!

Excellent piece of fan art you have here, MelyCat! You don't see much in the way of Xenogears fan art, much less a fan art of an NPC!

It's been four years since I've last played Xenogears, and I just completed my second play through this evening. I said it before and I'll say it again:

WHAT THEY HELL WERE THEY THINKING HAVING CHU-CHU AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER? Knowing Yui's background, I would have LOVED to have had her as a playable character! (Or at the very least Dominia, Kahr, or even ol' Maison!)

All Chu-Chu did was siphon the severity away from certain scenes. Sure, the battle with Achtzehn was ridiculous (personally, I think Midori should have played a larger role here), but do you remember that one scene with Krelian from Disc 2? Yeaaahh. I distinctly remember my reaction from my first play through:

"Holy shit! The ESRB allowed this game to show cru--HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! WHAT IS THAT?! Good going, creators, good going! That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever SEEN!!"

I still rolled my eyes my second play through, but I laughed at the thought of Elly showing up and gasping between bursts of laughter:

"All right, I'm here! Do what you want with me--HAHAHAHA! WHAT?! Guys! Guys! Someone--HAHA! Someone buy this man a round of Bartweisers! HAHA! Fei! Fei! I'll pay you back! Lend me some--HAHAHA! Lend me 20 bucks!!"

The developers should have designed Chu-Chu as something useful; a portable Gear shop for when you're cosmically FUCKED in a dungeon, a moving target, mittens in the Snowfield Hideout, or even STEW. Maria was utterly useless on foot, but at least she was could raise some hell piloting Seibzhen!

But I digress..

Yui was definitely a favorite NPC of mine, but their daughter? Creeped me out for whatever reason.

Thank you, so glad you liked it. I rather enjoy doing pieces of those lesser acknowledged, in fact I have another pic in mind that is of NPCs not often seen here ;)

Ha! Yes I agree, Chu-Chu was a useless character, better to have been relegated to a NPC role, after all I highly doubt that there were many that actually spent the time to build her up and used her as a even semi-regular battle character.

:D She can be creepy, but that's what I liked about here. All that telepathy and such

Yes Indeed! And while I have replayed it many times I wish I could brainwash myself to forget the game so I could enjoy all the shocks and goosebumps I got the first time around all over again!

He is that, and I adore him!

Nah, I'd give up the brainwashing of myself if only more people would play it and realize that Squaresoft screwed the pooch on possibly one of the greatest game series of all time.... just so that they could re-invest funding to Final Fantasy 8... which all things said and done, ranks amongst the worst of the FF series.

XD, I can see your point, they did screw themselves with the budget cutting and then just losing the whole possibility of a series of what would have been an incredibly epic franchise. I don't entirely agree with the opinion on FF8, while not the best game I did enjoy it, but hey, that's what opinions are ;). If I was to pick a FF game (or should say acknowledge it even as a part of FF or even a game at all) that made me shudder with revulsion it would be FFX-2.

Oh, I didn't say FF8 was terrible, but the general consensus amongst fans is that it was the worst of the series. Most fans don't consider FF-X2 to be a valid part of the series in any case. I thought it was kind of funny in a Charlie's Angels done Final Fantasy style.

Ultimately though, I would've preferred a complete Xenogears to a complete FF8. Also, a real and proper sequal to Chrono Trigger.

heh, I would think Charlie Angels would be more palatable in some regards. I really did try to play the game, I'm not one to throw derogatory comments without trying it first, but I found it unbelievably unbelievable and annoying. Perhaps someday if I can get myself in the mindset not to take it seriously and manage to overlook certain aspects I will attempt it again. I played it in the worst scenario, when it first came out and had no idea the direction the characters personalities were going to go. It was that and the garment thing that got on my nerves, too....girly for me.

*nods* true, Xenogears is one of the few games that I never tire of, and ever since PW was translated I've loved it even more.
Is it me or does it seem that so many companies tend to stumble at the line with these games?

Well, with all due sincerity, It is endemic of the culture as a whole that cerebral forms of entertainment are minimized or outright don't have a place. Xenogears was intense in its depth and the layers of storyline taking place over the course of the game. 12 Kingdoms is also a different beast as there are few Anime I've seen that spend so much time in focus on the culture and the world.

A lot of game companies just want to make games awesome for sheer awesomeness sake because there is a larger majority of the populace who purchase and consume such pap. There's more money in the easily churned out story that everyone has played a dozen or so times over, just with swapped out characters and tweaked story mechanics to make them seem original.

By and large, true originality rarely, if ever, gets in the limelight.

I can only agree to that assessment. I also have found that in any form of entertainment rarely is the mind truly challenged, if not at least engaged to some degree. Sad, but rather true. Thankfully there is a full plethora of entertainment available, from books to anime to games and so on, however wading through the morass of monotony to find those rare jems can be tiring. I will be honest though and admit I have found enjoyment in the lesser quality offerings, but only within reason and never the absolutely mind-numbing!

Ah, but there are plenty of people that voice their opinions against such pap! I think that if any industry truly didn't wish to implode than at some point they have to adhere to the voice of those consumers. After all without us where would they be? Perhaps I am merely having a bout of optimism (a rare occurrence) but I think after this rash of graphic glory overload the game industry fell into they may realize that all the glitzy prettiness doesn't blind everyone.

...true, which leads me to only grasp at the good that in finding those few makes them all that more precious

This is purely magnificent. I'm serious. It's beautiful! The detail in the clothing and pose (you did a most excellent job on the hands) amounts to be most epic!

But I'm more of caught on how you did her face and hair. She's looking quite lovely, about to kick ass. As is only appropriate for her. ;3 Glad to see her out of the home dress, too.

My mom has some neat ideas about her back story and how she met Citan and all that. It's how she became one of my favorite characters~

Thank you so much for the wonderful comment! I'm really glad you liked it so much and your opinion on it was very heartening!
I was kinda worried about the clothing, that some might consider it un'yui'ish, but I think there's a lot more to her than what little we get about her in the game and in Perfect Works :D Just like with any parent, there can be quite a story before the marriage and children came along in their lives, lol.

I bet your mom's ideas are interesting. There's so much there to speculate, the little tidbits we know for sure just leave so much to wonder on. I find Yui to be fascinating really. Its a shame there wasn't more of her.

(fangirl all you like ;) )

It really is. FF7 was an okay game (if now terribly, horribly, and mind numbingly overdone and over-hyped), but if Xenogears had all it's bits in line, it would've taken the cake and ripped the carpet out from under it. It would've just been so utterly awesome. I swear, if it ever came into my power to do so, I'd sell my soul for the rights. (Planning on going into video game design/writing/art.)

I liked FF7, I rather enjoyed the mental twist with Cloud's personality issues and all. I think that's what I like about a game the most XD if it has a twistedness to it. Even though I liked FF7 to me Xenogears still definitely rose above it anyway.
If you ever manage to get the rights and give it all that it should have I will be the first in line with my soul in hand to buy it with :D
